A volte esistono dei prodotti artistici ed estetici in grado di stupirci. Capita sempre più di rado in questa confusa epoca, ma succede. E’il caso di questo piccolo gioiello, il sorprendente disco dei “Barons 80”, geniali e originali nel reinterpretare il passato e renderlo modernissimo ed attuale per ascoltatori del 2020. Ma chi sono i “Barons 80”? Cosa si cela dietro questo misterioso gruppo che sta già facendo parlare anche oltre gli ambienti tradizionali del Rockabilly? Sarebbe riduttivo collocarli in un ambito specifico, posso solamente dirvi che è ottima musica, suonata in maniera eccellente fuori da ogni tipo di schema consolidato. Blasco "The Razor" ovvero Blasco Mirabella da Catania. Ovvero l’ultimo dei Grandi. Tutti quelli cha amano la musica vera dovrebbero essergli grati. Ci ha fatto rivivere i giorni del Rock nel nuovo secolo come non avremmo mai pensato. Lontano dalle scene dopo i trionfi con i leggendari Boppin Kids a Sanremo Rock e in tutte le manifestazioni che contavano negli anni Ottanta, dopo le apparizioni televisive al “Maurizio Costanzo Show”e al “Boom” di Simona Ventura e Gene Gnocchi, è sempre ritornato con formazioni diverse spaziando dal Rockabilly al Surf, dal Jazz allo Swing, stupendo tutti quanti per il talento inesauribile non solo come contrabbassista, ma anche e soprattutto direi come cantante e chitarrista. Ascoltando questo disco, che definirei “definitivo”, capirete di cosa sto parlando. Suo sodale nei Boppin Kids e in altre fortunate e spettacolari formazioni come Blasco & the Kids, è Emilio "The Insane" ovvero Emilio Catera. Oltre ad essere un eccellente batterista, che ha sempre spaziato in vari generi e stili, Emilio è una persona seria ed assennata che ama il suo lavoro e ha dato il meglio di se in tantissimi spettacoli dal vivo. Nonostante sia anche lui una personalità leggendaria nell’ambito del Rockabilly, ha sempre mantenuto un profilo di semplicità e modestia, in un mondo pervaso spesso da figuri arroganti e incapaci. Sono felice di seguirlo da anni; un artista poliedrico che si mette sempre in discussione, nonostante i risultati importanti che ha raggiunto. Infine,"Rockin’Gallaro" ovvero Peppe Gallaro da Ragusa. La speranza di una nuova ventata di Rockabilly, lontana da certe derive Authentic o di maniera. Si può fare Rock and Roll, guardando al passato , ma con originalità. Non deve essere stato facile per lui misurarsi con due mostri sacri come Blasco ed Emilio, ma ritengo ci sia riuscito egregiamente e questo disco lo dimostra. Pensiamo che questo ragazzo farà grandi cose. Sono nelle sue corde.I quattro fantastici pezzi sono "Shirley" (1958), realizzata la prima volta da Johnny Fred & the Playboys che rettificarono il loro nome in Playboy band per evitare confusione con l’omonima band di Gary Lewis che divenne molto famosa negli anni sessanta. Johnny Fred era un ottimo cantante ed un giocatore di basket nel campionato universitario U.S.A. Incrociò le due attività per tutta la vita con ottimi risultati; "Shirley" sarà però resa famosa da Shakin’ Stevens, l’Elvis gallese, che negli anni ottanta fu una superstar mondiale ben oltre i circuiti del Rock and Roll revival; "Love Song", singolo dei Damned, pubblicato nell'aprile 1979, fu' il primo frutto dell'accordo riformato con Chiswick Records, reso ancor più efficace con quattro varianti di copertina, ognuna con un membro della band, con altre 20.000 copie stampate su vinile rosso (5.000 per ogni componente). Il passaggio radiofonico, la rende una canzone accattivante, e ciò decreta il primo successo dei Damned, che raggiunse il numero 20 nella UK Singles Chart, portando al debutto la band in Top of the Pops. "Love Song" è stata inclusa nel terzo album della band, “Machine Gun Etiquette”, ed è stata citata nella traccia dell'album. La sigla del cartone animato del 1967 “Spider-Man” è diventata un popolare standard musicale. Il testo fu scritto dal compositore vincitore dell'Academy Award Paul Francis Webster, mentre la musica fu composta da Bob Harris. I primi versi della canzone "Spider-Man, Spider-Man, does whatever a spider can" sono diventati un marchio del personaggio. Il brano presenta molte similitudini a due canzoni boogie degli anni sessanta "Boogie Stop Shuffle" di Charles Mingus del 1959, e "Bru's Boogie Woogie" di Dave Brubeck del 1961, ed è probabilmente basato su di esse. Popolari versioni quelle dei Ramones e di Michael Bublè. Questa dei Barons 80 è una versione stupenda. "She’s the Angel of My Dreams", è il pezzo inedito, scritto da Blasco Mirabella, e credo che diventerà un classico. Non credevo potesse essere possibile nel 2020.

Sometimes there are artistic and aesthetic products that can amaze us. It happens less and less in this confused era, but it happens. And such is the case of this little jewel, the surprising recording from Barons 80. It’s ingenious and original in reinterpreting the past and making it very modern and current for listeners in 2020. But who are Barons 80? What is hidden behind this mysterious group that is already making people talk beyond the traditional environments of rockabilly? It would be an understatement to place them in a specific area; I can only tell you that it’s excellent music, played in an excellent way, outside any type of established scheme.
Blasco "The Razor" Mirabella from Catania. The last of the “great ones”. Everyone who loves real music should be grateful to him. He made us relive the days of Rock in the new century as we never would have thought. At times off the radar after triumphs with the legendary Boppin’ Kids in Sanremo Rock and in all the events that counted in the eighties, including television appearances on "The Maurizio Costanzo Show" and "Boom" with Simona Ventura and Gene Gnocchi, he has always returned with different projects ranging from Rockabilly to Surf, from Jazz to Swing. He amazes everyone with an inexhaustible talent, not only as a double bass player, but especially, I would say, as a singer and guitarist. Listening to this record, which I would call "definitive", you’ll understand what I am talking about.
His partner in Boppin’ Kids and in other fortunate and spectacular line-ups such as Blasco & The Kids, is Emilio "The Insane" Catera. In addition to being an excellent drummer, who has always ranged in various genres and styles, Emilio is a serious and sensible person who loves his job and has given his best in innumerable live shows. Although he is also a legendary personality in the rockabilly world, he has always maintained a profile of simplicity and modesty, in an environment often pervaded by arrogant and incapable personalities. I have been happy to follow him for years; a multifaceted artist who always questions himself, despite the important results he has achieved.
Finally there’s Peppe Gallaro from Ragusa, whose stage name is "Rockin' Gallaro". A fresh breeze for the new wave of Rockabilly, far from certain Authentic or fashion movements. We’re talking Rock ‘n’ Roll, looking to the past, but with originality. It must not have been easy for him to play alongside two monsters like Blasco and Emilio, but I think he did it very well, and this record proves it. We think this guy will do great things: they’re in his strings.
The first of four fantastic pieces is "Shirley" (1958), recorded for the first time by John Fred & The Playboys, who changed their name to The Playboy Band to avoid confusion with the homonymous band of Gary Lewis which became quite famous in the sixties. John Fred was an excellent singer and basketball player in the U.S.A.; he mixed the two activities throughout his life with excellent results. "Shirley" would be made even more famous by Shakin' Stevens, the Welsh Elvis, who in the 1980s was a worldwide superstar far beyond the circuits of the Rock ‘n’ Roll revival.
"Love Song", The Damned's single released in April 1979, was the first result of the renegotiated agreement with Chiswick Records, made even more effective with four versions of the album cover, each with a member of the band. Another 20,000 copies were printed on red vinyl (5,000 for each component). Radio play made it a captivating song, and it marked the first success of The Damned, reaching number 20 on the UK Singles Chart, and leading to the debut of the band on Top of the Pops. "Love Song" was included on the band's third album, "Machine Gun Etiquette".
The theme song for the 1967 cartoon "Spider-Man" has become a popular musical standard. The lyrics were written by Academy Award-winning composer Paul Francis Webster, while the music was composed by Bob Harris. The first lines of the song "Spider-Man, Spider-Man, does whatever a spider can" have become a trademark of the character. The song presents many similarities to two 1960s boogie songs: Charles Mingus' “Boogie Stop Shuffle” from 1959, and Dave Brubeck's "Bru's Boogie Woogie" from 1961, and is likely based on them. Popular versions are those of The Ramones and Michael Bublè. The version from Barons 80 is a gorgeous one.
"She's the Angel of My Dreams" is the previously-unreleased piece, written by Blasco Mirabella, and I believe it will become a classic. I didn't think this could be possible in 2020.
